There are currently over 150 databases that can be categorized as fitting into the NoSQL, or Not Only SQL realm and the number seems to be increasing. They include: column or column family stores; document stores; key-value or tuple stores; object databases; graph databases; XML and RDF databases; multi-dimensional and scientific databases; and multi-model databases. They may be embedded, distributed, grid or cloud enabled and support non-traditional transaction modes and parallel processing environments, such as Hadoop. Most of them have been designed with very specific goals in mind, which tends to limit their applicability to particular problem sets.

The speaker, who has been working with alternatives to traditional or mainstream database technologies for almost three decades and was one of the founders of Objectivity, Inc., will first provide a brief overview of the main NoSQL database technologies. He will then illustrate typical use cases with examples from all of the above domains before setting out a framework for determining which traditional and/or NoSQL technologies should be used for a particular purpose.

The session will be vendor neutral. The intended audience members should be technical, with an interest in understanding the issues involved in selecting one or more NoSQL solutions to suit their needs.
